Knowing when to seek immediate emergency veterinary care can make all the difference for your pet’s health and well-being. We’ve provided a guide to help you recognize emergency signs and know what to do if your pet needs urgent attention.
Signs Your Pet Needs Emergency Care
Breathing and Respiratory Emergencies
Difficulty breathing, rapid breathing, or choking
Persistent coughing, gagging, or wheezing
Bleeding and Trauma
Severe bleeding or bleeding that doesn’t stop within 5 minutes
Bleeding from the nose, mouth, or rectum
Fractured bones, severe lameness, or inability to walk
Eye injuries or trauma
Neurological Emergencies
Seizures or convulsions
Staggering, disorientation, or sudden weakness
Loss of consciousness or unresponsiveness
Digestive Emergencies
Severe vomiting or diarrhea, especially if it occurs more than twice within 24 hours
Inability to urinate, difficulty urinating, or pain when passing urine or stool
Refusal to drink water for 24 hours or more
Sudden abdominal swelling or bloating (especially in large or deep-chested dogs)
Toxin Exposure
Suspected or known ingestion of toxic or poisonous substances, including antifreeze, xylitol, chocolate, medications, household chemicals, or rodent poison
Other Urgent Signs
Showing signs of severe pain, distress or anxiety
Heat stress or heatstroke symptoms such as excessive panting, weakness, or collapse
Excessive drooling or foaming at the mouth
