Meet Dr. Kate Brust, DVM
We are excited to introduce Dr. Kate Brust!
Dr. Kate’s passion for animals began early as she grew up on her family’s farm in upstate New York. Her love for veterinary medicine deepened while shadowing local veterinarian mentors and while working at a rhino rehabilitation center in South Africa. She then pursued her Bachelor of Science degree from Cornell University. After earning her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree from Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine, Dr. Kate practiced mixed animal veterinary medicine in northern Connecticut and New Hampshire.
Returning to her roots in upstate New York, Dr. Kate purchased Kinderhook Animal Hospital in 2025. She is committed to supporting the health of her patients at every stage of life, offering everything from preventative care to diagnostic services and treatment for illnesses and injuries. Dr. Kate takes pride in creating personalized treatment plans tailored to each pet’s unique needs, ensuring that pets and their owners feel well-cared for and informed.
Outside of the clinic, Dr. Kate enjoys skiing, golfing, reading, and assisting on her family farm, where her love for animals continues to thrive.
Meet Dr. Chris Southard, DVM
Dr. Chris Southard’s interest in veterinary medicine began at a young age while working on a dairy farm, where he developed a deep appreciation for animals and the people who care for them. Although his path included a few detours along the way, he always knew his ultimate goal was to become a veterinarian.
Dr. Southard earned his Bachelor of Science in Animal Science from the University of Massachusetts Amherst before going on to attend Michigan State University College of Veterinary Medicine. He graduated in 1982, first in his class of 103 students. He began his career as an equine veterinarian before transitioning to small animal medicine when he purchased Kinderhook Animal Hospital in 1989. Over the years, he has cared for generations of pets and built strong relationships within the community. He enjoys all aspects of veterinary medicine and especially values collaborating with colleagues on challenging cases. One memorable moment in his career was his time spent treating Gifted, a gelding who won the team bronze medal in dressage at the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona. In addition to his clinical work, Dr. Southard has also contributed to the field by publishing an article on bronchopulmonary aspergillosis.
Outside of veterinary medicine, Dr. Southard enjoys competing in the Highland Games, a traditional Scottish athletic competition. In 2025, he was named the New York State Highland Games Champion, with the sheaf toss and the weight for distance among his favorite events.
Dr. Southard values the close connections formed at Kinderhook Animal Hospital and in the surrounding community. As the practice enters a new chapter under Dr. Kate Brust’s ownership, he looks forward to continuing the hospital’s tradition of personal care—where clients and their pets are known by both face and name.
